In light of the Green Committee’s recent exciting news about switching from plastic to compostable hot lunch containers, here are tips on how to make home-packed school lunches more sustainable.
Ditch the plastic! Use lunchboxes, thermoses and water bottles made out of stainless steel or other durable materials that will last from Tiny YPK through Middle School; as your child’s style changes over the years, they can add magnets or stickers to decorate them and keep them looking new.
Beeswax or cloth wraps or silicone pouches for sandwiches and snacks are fun and colorful as well as long-lasting and easy to wash and re-use.
Cloth napkins and stainless steel or bamboo utensils are not only easier on the environment, they help children learn good habits at the table and add pleasure to the experience of eating together.
Below are a few examples of eco-friendly products. These are just suggestions; wherever possible, use what you already have at home, or consider buying secondhand!
